Warren Helwig Obituary



Warren Helwig passed into glory July 5, 2018.  Loved and admired by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Born in 1918 to Fred and Ruby (Tiebor) Helwig in Tonawanda.  Married to Betty Foels in 1943 until her death in 2001.  Brother of the late Wallace (Alice) Helwig.  Brother-in-law of Vivian and the late Melvin Foels.  Father of Patricia (Jay) Poeller.  Grandfather of Jason (Christina) Poeller, Phillip (Alicia) Poeller, and Abigail (Tim)  Fidanza.
Also survived by 11 great grandchildren and 5 nieces and nephews: Paul, Jeff, Steven (deceased) Helwig, Deborah (Chip) Schulyer, Jay and Lee (Sue) Foels and special friend Bert Hardleben.  Warren was a life long member of Salem United church of Christ in Tonawanda, and was born again in 1975 and worshipped at The Chapel from 1975-1990.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and was sent to study at Renessler Polytechnic Institute and commissioned an Ensien and discharged at the end of World War 2.
He graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1936, Buffalo State College, with a BS and MS in Education, and State University at Buffalo with a PhD in Education.
He taught Industrial Arts at Grover Cleveland High School from 1947-1952, Riverside High School from 1952-1958, and Tonawanda  High School from 1958-1980.  Warren also served as an Educational Consultant for Christian Academy of WNY from 2006-2011.   A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 9th, at 12:15 PM at Acacia Park Cemetery Chapel, 4215 Tonawanda Creek Rd. in the Town of Pendleton.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Christian Academy of WNY (cawny.com) would be appreciated.
