Gary L. Warner Obituary

WARNER, GARY L.

April 3, 1938 - March 12, 2025

Age 86 of the Town of Tonawanda, passed away peacefully at his home just shy of his 87th birthday surrounded by his loving family.
Son of the late Russell and Marjorie Warner, brother of the late Robert (late Ann) Warner. Former husband of Judith (nee O'Brien) Warner and former husband of the late Virginia Spencer. Father of Kathleen (Michael) Yacos, Michael (Lisa) Warner, Gregory (Andrea) Warner, Jay Warner, Erin (Daniel) Finn, Sean Murphy and Shane Murphy. Grandfather of Michael (Heather), Lauren (James), Andrew (Brianna), Michael, Matthew (Samantha), William, Shawn (Alex), Hunter, Preston, Luca, Lincoln, Locke, Aidan, Tierney, Morgan, Madison, McKenzie, Sheamus and Shealon. Great grandfather of Madison, Jacob, Pierce, Hudson, Stella and Jameson. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and lifelong friend Michael "Woons" Woods.
From a young age, Gary Warner was destined to play basketball. A proud member of the Kenmore West Class of 1956, he was a standout for the Blue Devils, earning a reputation as a prolific scorer. His exceptional talent led to First Team All-League and First Team All-Niagara Frontier League (NFL) honors in his senior season, with his impressive junior-year performance also securing him All-League recognition. In 2013, his legacy was cemented when he was inducted into the Kenmore West Athletic Hall of Fame for basketball.
His passion for the game didn't stop after high school. A multi-time National AAU MVP, Gary's basketball career spanned decades, competing at a high level until the age of 70. Even at 43 years old, he earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Eastern Regional AAU Tournament (1981)—a testament to his enduring skill and dedication to the sport. Since 1959, he was a proud member of the Eldredge Bicycle Club, which played a pivotal role in launching his long and decorated basketball career. The Eldredge was a premier hub for top basketball talent from Western New York and beyond, hosting competitive tournaments where Gary played alongside—and faced off against—legends such as Bob Lanier, Hubie Brown, Calvin Murphy, and Randy Smith, among others.
Gary was a man of service and commitment. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving proudly as a Specialist 4th Class from 1956 to 1958, and continued his service in the Enlisted Reserves from 1958 to 1962.
Following his military service, Gary's talent on the court caught the attention of Niagara University's legendary coach, Taps Gallagher, who had led the Purple Eagles to 26 winning seasons and seven NIT Tournament appearances over his 31-year career. Gallagher heavily recruited Gary for the 1964-65 season, offering him a full scholarship to play for Niagara. However, Gary declined the opportunity, prioritizing his family obligations over continuing his collegiate basketball career.
Gary also excelled in academics, continuing his education at Medaille College, where he earned honor roll distinctions.
His professional career was equally impressive. For 36 years, Gary thrived in professional sales management at Buffalo Hotel Supply, where he was recognized as Sales/Marketing Person of the Year in 1983. His leadership, expertise, and unwavering work ethic defined his successful career until his well-earned retirement in 2009.
In retirement, Gary embraced life to the fullest. He cherished time spent with his family and countless friends, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and an indomitable spirit. His impact—whether on the basketball court, in his career, or among those who knew him—will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
